Southern Refrigerated Transport recognized as a veteran-friendly employer

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz recognizes temperature-controlled carrier in January letter

TEXARKANA, Ark. (Jan. 18, 2019) — U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, commended and complimented Southern Refrigerated Transport (SRT) on its efforts to employ more veterans in a letter to the temperature-controlled carrier's headquarters earlier this month.

“It is a pleasure to join the Texas Workforce Commission in recognizing Southern Refrigerated Transport, Inc., as a nominee for 2018 Veteran-Friendly Employer of the Year,” Cruz said in the letter. “The work your team is doing in partnership with Workforce Solutions Northeast Texas is making a lasting impact in the Texarkana community and the great state of Texas.”

SRT currently employs approximately 1,100 employees, around 900 of whom are professional drivers.

Larry Dennis, driver liaison and head of veterans’ programs at SRT, is a veteran of the United States Air Force, and believes trucking offers veterans opportunities to employ the skills and experience gained through military service.

“Being a professional driver means being a leader,” Dennis said. “You’re in charge of your truck, of communicating with your team in operations and safety and of making sure you get your job done on time.”

Billy Cartright, COO at SRT, said leaders at the temperature-controlled carrier are proud of the designation the company is earning as a veteran-friendly employer.

“We have a lot of great things going here at SRT,” he said,” and definitely one of the highlights is being able to provide jobs to our region’s veterans. Trucking is all about service, so we see serving our city, state and region with great jobs and competitive pay as an extension of our mission to be problem solvers.”
