Covenant Transport Services, McKee Foods donate relief

Local companies give food, transportation to hurricane-battered Carolinas

Chattanooga, Tenn. (Sept. 18, 2018) — Beneath a hot, cloudless September sky – following a weekend of rain from the outstretched arms of Hurricane Florence – Mark Hollins and Arthur Hall hooked their white Freightliner tractor to a 53-foot trailer at McKee Foods Corp., ready to set out on a trip to deliver relief to hurricane-battered North Carolina.

For the Covenant Transport driving team, this is what being a professional driver is about, braving conditions to keep the country, and communities, moving.

“I was ready to roll, no big deal,” said Hollins, whose hometown of Houston, Texas, was ravaged by Hurricane Harvey a year ago. [Donated relief] helped us. Return the favor, you know?”

The relief hauled by Hollins and Hall this week is a combination of goods and services donated by a pair of longtime local companies, McKee Foods Corp., and Covenant Transport Services.

McKee donated 45 pallets of snack foods to feed folks at emergency shelters in the Carolinas, and Covenant Transport Services donated a tractor-trailer and the time and talent of a professional driving team to deliver the goods.

“When we learned McKee Foods was donating food for relief in the area affected by last week’s storms, we were happy to step up and do our part to help that relief reach its destination,” said Sam Hough, COO at Covenant Transport. “We’re proud of the generosity shown by our neighbors at McKee, and we’re proud to stand with them in supporting our friends and neighbors on the east coast.”

Covenant Transport Services is also currently working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide teams for water and food kits, and working with the American Red Cross to supply transportation for other food going in and out of the affected area.
